The short answer
How do you design
a logo with AI?
The tool matters less than the process. AI is fast at producing options and poor at judging them, so the workflow is built around giving it clear direction and checking its work.
- Write a brief. Define the business, audience, personality and where the logo will be used.
- Pick the right kind of AI tool. An AI logo maker for a finished logo, an image generator for exploration, or a vector generator for custom symbols.
- Generate wide. Produce 30 to 50 options from a structured prompt and shortlist three.
- Edit narrow. Refine one option with specific instructions instead of regenerating from scratch.
- Finish and verify. Get true vector files, build the logo variations, check the license and search for similar marks.
Where AI helps, and where it still needs you
Whether you want to create a logo with AI for a new business or refresh an existing one, it helps to know which parts of the job AI handles well. In our experience, people get the best results when they hand AI the fast, repetitive work and keep the decisions for themselves.
| Task | AI is good at | You still decide |
|---|---|---|
| Ideas | Producing dozens of directions in minutes | Which direction fits the brief and stands apart from competitors |
| Variations | Trying colors, layouts and type styles quickly | When to stop exploring and commit to one design |
| Edits | Applying specific changes on request | What to change, based on how the logo will be used |
| Typography | Suggesting pairings (logo makers); rendering text varies by tool | Spelling, legibility and letter spacing |
| Files | Exporting editable vector files, in some logo makers and vector tools | Whether the files actually work for print and signage |
| Rights | Nothing; AI cannot check this for you | License terms, similarity searches and trademark decisions |
Step 1 and 2
Start with a brief,
then choose your tool
There are three kinds of AI logo tools, and they produce very different results. Choosing the wrong kind is the most common reason people end up with an attractive image they cannot use as a logo.
The five-line brief
Every prompt in this guide is built from five answers. Write them down before you open any tool.
Business: what you do, for whom, and where.
Personality: three words the logo should feel like (for example, calm, crafted, local).
Avoid: three words it must not feel like (for example, corporate, childish, cheap).
Uses: the three places the logo matters most (for example, bottle label, Instagram avatar, delivery van).
Limits: number of colors, any required symbol, name length, languages.
| Tool type | Examples | What you get | Best for | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| AI logo makers | Design.com, Brandmark, Wix Logo Maker | A complete logo with name, icon and layout. Some, such as Design.com, build every logo as a vector, so you download editable SVG, EPS and PDF files | A finished, usable logo quickly | Less open-ended than a blank prompt |
| AI image generators | ChatGPT, Ideogram, Midjourney, Adobe Firefly | A picture of a logo (PNG or JPG) | Exploring unusual concepts | No vector file, no layout variations, details drift between versions |
| AI vector generators | Recraft | An editable SVG symbol | Custom icons for designers | Typography and layout are up to you |
Image generators are excellent sketchbooks. Treat what they produce as concept art rather than the final logo, unless you are prepared to redraw it as a vector.
Tool picks
Best AI logo makers
in 2026
If you want a finished logo rather than concept art, start with a dedicated AI logo maker. These four stood out on the points this guide cares about: how well the AI follows a brief, whether you can edit the result precisely, and whether you get editable vector files you can use in print.
| AI logo maker | Best for | AI editing | Editable vector files | Price from |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Design.com | A complete, editable logo from one prompt | Chat edits to icon and text, plus manual editor | SVG, EPS and PDF on every logo | Free logos; paid from $3/month billed annually |
| Brandmark | Type-led logos, paid once | Regenerate and adjust in editor | Vector files from the $35 package | $35 one time |
| Recraft | Custom AI symbols for designers | Prompt-based regeneration | SVG on paid plans (symbol only) | $10/month billed annually |
| BrandCrowd | Browsing templates by industry | Chat edits to icon and text, plus manual editor | SVG, EPS and PDF | Free logos; paid from $3/month billed annually |
#01
Design.com
Best AI logo maker overall
- Output
- Editable vector logo (SVG, EPS, PDF) plus PNG, JPG, GIF, MP4
- Skill level
- Beginner to professional
- Trustpilot
- 4.7/5 from 4,500+ reviews
The shortest route from a prompt to a finished, editable vector logo.
How the AI works
Enter your business name, industry and a short description, and Design.com's AI logo generator creates new logo designs rather than only recoloring templates. It also draws on a library of more than 500,000 designer-made logo templates. Both routes use 750+ fonts, 525+ of them exclusive to the platform, and more than 62,000 custom vector shapes, which helps results avoid the generic look of shared asset libraries.
Editing
This is where it differs most from an image generator. You can type an instruction such as "simplify the icon" or "make the name bolder" and the AI applies it to your selected logo instead of generating a new one. Every element remains editable by hand: icon, text, color, spacing and layout.
Files
Logos are built as vectors, so the downloads are true, editable vector files: SVG, EPS and PDF, plus PNG and JPG, animated GIF and MP4 versions, an icon-only version and transparent backgrounds. You can open the SVG or EPS in Illustrator, Figma or Inkscape and keep editing, and send the PDF or EPS straight to a printer or sign maker. That removes the redrawing step that image generators require.
Licensing
Selected free logos include the full vector set and a royalty-free commercial license. Paid logos come with a non-exclusive Standard license; the Exclusive license ($60/year or $145 one time) removes the template from sale and makes the logo eligible for trademark registration.
Pricing
Free: selected logos with vector files. Paid: Starter from $3/month billed annually ($36/year) or $9 monthly. One subscription covers one logo, and the standard monthly Starter rate is $25, so check the renewal price at checkout.
New AI-generated designs; chat editing; editable vector files on every logo; exclusive license option.
One logo per subscription; exclusivity costs extra; font files cannot be downloaded.
#02
Brandmark
Best one-time purchase
- Output
- PNG and vector files; source files from $95
- Skill level
- Beginner to intermediate
Clean, type-led AI logos with simple one-time pricing.
How the AI works
Brandmark generates logos from your business name and a few keywords. It is strongest at typography, with well-paired fonts and restrained palettes that suit consultancies, agencies and software products. Its icons are less distinctive than its lettering, and there is no template library or chat editing.
Files and licensing
Basic ($35) includes PNG and vector files. Designer ($95) adds source files, unlimited revisions, brand guidelines and social and business card designs. Enterprise ($195) adds hand-crafted concepts and a font download. All packages include full copyright.
One-time pricing; vectors in the entry package; full copyright.
No chat editing; icons can look generic.
#03
Recraft
Best for custom AI vector symbols
- Output
- SVG symbol on paid plans; PNG and JPG
- Skill level
- Intermediate to advanced
A vector generator for designers who want an original symbol and will finish the logo themselves.
How the AI works
Recraft turns a text prompt into vector artwork and lets you lock a style and palette for consistent results. It produces a symbol rather than a complete logo, so typography, spacing and layouts are up to you.
Files and licensing
Vector generation exports SVG. Free-plan images belong to Recraft, are public and cannot be used commercially; paid-plan images come with ownership and commercial rights. Basic costs $12 monthly or $10/month billed annually.
Original vector symbols; style control; ownership on paid plans.
No logo layouts or type; path cleanup needed.
#04
BrandCrowd
Best for browsing templates by industry
- Output
- Vector logo (SVG, EPS, PDF) plus PNG and JPG
- Skill level
- Beginner
- Trustpilot
- 4.7/5 from 9,500+ reviews
A template-first option for people who would rather choose from finished designs than write a prompt.
How the AI works
BrandCrowd's AI logo generator suggests designs from a catalog of more than 380,000 designer-made templates, filtered by industry and style. That makes it quick to compare directions such as mascots, badges and monograms side by side. Because results start from templates, they are less open-ended than a generator that creates new layouts.
Editing, files and licensing
You can edit the icon and text by chat or by hand, and download vector and image files. Selected free logos include vector files, and an extended license removes a template from the library for exclusive use.
Pricing
Free: selected logos with vector files. Paid: from $3/month billed annually or $9 monthly. Check the renewal price at checkout.
Large template library; industry filters; strong review record.
Template-based results; fewer new layouts than a prompt-led generator.
What about ChatGPT, Ideogram and Midjourney? They are excellent for exploring ideas, and Ideogram handles lettering well, but they produce raster images (PNG or JPG) rather than editable vector logos. Use them as a sketchbook, then rebuild the winning idea in an AI logo maker. For a broader comparison, see our best logo makers guide.
Steps 3 and 4 / Worked example
One logo, start to
finish, with AI
To show the process rather than describe it, we follow one fictional business through every round: Fern & Ferment, a small-batch kombucha brewery selling at farmers' markets and local cafés.
Business: small-batch kombucha brewery selling at markets and cafés.
Personality: fresh, crafted, friendly. Avoid: clinical, hippie, cartoonish.
Uses: round bottle label, Instagram avatar, market banner.
Limits: two colors, must print on kraft paper labels.
Round 1: generate wide
The first prompt describes the business and the feeling, not a specific drawing. The goal of round one is variety, so we generate around 40 options and look for directions rather than finished logos.
Logo for Fern & Ferment, a small-batch kombucha brewery sold at farmers' markets. Fresh, crafted and friendly, not clinical or cartoonish. Combine a botanical idea with a sense of fizz or fermentation. Two colors. Flat vector style, works in one color, plain white background, no mockups.
Jar, leaves, bubbles and a long name. Unreadable on a small label.
Clean, but a leaf in a circle could be any wellness brand.
Charming script, but it fails at avatar size and on kraft paper.
One idea: a fern rising inside a bubble. Distinct and simple.
Notice what eliminated the first three. None of them looked bad on screen. A failed the small-size test, B failed the distinctiveness test and C failed the legibility test. Judge every AI result against the brief and the three uses you listed, not against how polished it looks in the preview.
Round 2: edit narrow
Once you have a direction, stop generating new logos. Each new generation starts from zero and loses what was working. Instead, give one specific instruction at a time to the option you chose. AI logo makers with chat editing, such as Design.com, apply the instruction to the design you selected rather than starting over. In an image generator, refer back to the image and repeat the parts to keep.
“Keep the layout. Reduce the fern to four leaflets so it stays clear at small sizes.”
Result: the symbol survives on a 2 cm bottle cap.“Make the bubble stroke the same weight as the fern so they read as one shape.”
Result: the icon feels deliberate instead of assembled.“Replace the serif with a rounded sans-serif in medium weight. Keep both colors.”
Result: friendlier and more legible on kraft paper.“Create a one-color version in dark green and a stacked layout with the icon above the name.”
Result: label, avatar and banner versions from one design.Round 3: finish the system
The final step is not another prompt. It is producing the versions the brief asked for and checking them where they will be used.
One color, prints cleanly on kraft labels.
The icon alone carries the brand at small sizes.
Horizontal layout for wide spaces.
Writing better prompts
The anatomy of a
good AI logo prompt
Most weak AI logos come from prompts that describe a picture instead of a logo. A good logo prompt has seven parts, in roughly this order. You will not need all seven every time, but leaving out the last two is what produces gradients, 3D effects and mockup backgrounds.
| Part | Why it matters | Useful words |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Logo type | Tells the AI what structure to build | wordmark, lettermark, monogram, combination mark, emblem, abstract mark, mascot |
| 2. Name | Text is the hardest part for AI; state it exactly | Put the name in quotes in image generators |
| 3. Business and audience | Sets the right tone and category cues | who it serves, price level, location |
| 4. One core idea | Prevents cluttered, multi-symbol logos | one symbol, negative space, single continuous line |
| 5. Personality | Drives typeface, weight and shape choices | calm, bold, precise, playful, premium, handmade |
| 6. Color limits | Keeps print costs low and the mark consistent | one color, two colors, named colors or HEX codes |
| 7. Production rules | Makes the output usable as a logo | flat vector, works in one color, plain background, no gradients, no 3D, no mockups |
Weak prompt versus strong prompt
Cool modern logo for a coffee company with a coffee bean and steam and a mountain, make it pop.
Three symbols, no name, no audience, no production rules. Expect a busy, glossy illustration.
Wordmark for "Ridgeline Coffee", a specialty roaster for outdoor enthusiasts. Clean geometric sans-serif with a subtle mountain peak formed by the letter A. Calm, confident. One color, dark charcoal. Flat vector, plain white background, no gradients, no mockups.
One idea, exact name, clear tone and rules the AI can follow.
Copy and adapt
AI logo prompt library
Each prompt below follows the seven-part structure. Replace the details in brackets with your own. They work in AI logo makers that accept a description and in image generators such as ChatGPT, Ideogram and Midjourney.
By logo type
Wordmark for "[Name]", a [business] for [audience]. Custom [serif / geometric sans-serif] lettering with one distinctive letter detail. [Personality words]. One color. Flat vector, white background, no icon, no gradients.
Monogram using the letters "[AB]" for [business]. Letters interlocked into one balanced shape inside an implied square. [Personality words]. One color. Flat vector, white background, no extra text.
Simple icon of [one object] for [business], designed to be recognizable at 16 pixels. Bold, even line weights. [Personality words]. Two colors. Flat vector, white background, no text.
Abstract geometric symbol suggesting [idea, such as growth or connection] for [business]. Built from simple circles and straight lines. [Personality words]. One color. Flat vector, white background, no text.
Combination mark for "[Name]", a [business]. [One core symbol] to the left of the name in a [typeface style]. Icon and text with similar visual weight. [Two colors]. Flat vector, white background, no mockups.
Badge-style emblem for "[Name]", established [year], a [business]. Circular frame, name around the top, simple [symbol] in the center. Vintage but clean. One color. Flat vector, white background, no texture.
Friendly mascot logo for "[Name]", a [business] for [audience]. A simplified [animal or character] with a [expression], thick outlines and minimal detail so it prints small. [Two or three colors]. Flat vector, white background.
By industry
| Industry | Prompt direction | Avoid asking for |
|---|---|---|
| Accounting and finance | Wordmark with a precise sans-serif, a subtle upward angle in one letter, navy or deep green | Calculators, dollar signs, bar charts |
| Restaurant and café | Combination mark with a warm serif and one simple ingredient shape | Full plates, steam, chef hats together |
| Health and wellness | Abstract mark from soft curves, calm two-color palette | Medical crosses and stethoscopes unless clinical |
| Construction and trades | Bold slab or condensed sans-serif with a strong geometric icon | Hammers, houses and roofs combined |
| Tech and software | Lettermark or abstract mark built on a grid, one bright accent color | Circuit boards, globes, generic "connected dots" |
| Beauty and fashion | Refined wordmark with high-contrast serif or elegant monogram | Lipsticks, hangers, glitter effects |
Troubleshooting
How to fix the most
common AI logo mistakes
Every AI tool makes the same handful of mistakes. Knowing the cause tells you which instruction fixes it.
| Problem | Why it happens | Fix instruction |
|---|---|---|
| Misspelled or garbled name | Image models draw letters as shapes rather than spelling them | Put the name in quotes, keep it short, or set the text yourself in a logo maker or design tool |
| Too much detail | The prompt listed several symbols, or none was specified | "One symbol only. Reduce to the simplest recognizable shape." |
| Gradients, shadows or 3D | Models default to polished illustration styles | "Flat vector, solid colors, no gradients, no shadows, no 3D." |
| Logo on a mockup or textured background | The model treats "logo" as a product photo | "Plain white background, no mockup, no paper texture." |
| Each version looks completely different | Regenerating starts from zero every time | Edit the selected design instead, and restate what to keep: "Keep the layout and colors, change only…" |
| Looks like a famous brand | The model is drawing on familiar visual patterns | Never use brand names or "in the style of" another company. Change the core symbol and run a similarity search |
| Unbalanced icon and text | The model sizes elements independently | "Give the icon and lettering similar visual weight; align the icon to the cap height." |
| Colors look different in print | Screen RGB colors shift when printed in CMYK | Define exact HEX values, then ask your printer for CMYK or Pantone matches and a proof |
Step 5 / Finish
From AI image to
a usable logo file
An AI image is not yet a logo file. Printers, sign makers and embroiderers need vector artwork, and your website and social profiles need several versions. How you get there depends on the tool you used.
Three routes to a vector logo
Download from an AI logo maker.
Some AI logo makers build every logo as a vector. Design.com, for example, exports editable SVG, EPS and PDF files directly, with icon-only and transparent versions, which you can keep editing in Illustrator, Figma or Inkscape. This is the shortest route.
Generate as a vector.
Recraft produces SVG output on paid plans. Expect to clean up paths and set the typography yourself.
Redraw or trace an image.
For images from ChatGPT, Midjourney or Ideogram, auto-tracing tools give a rough start. For a professional result, redraw the logo in vector software such as Illustrator, Figma or Inkscape.
Check the file before you trust it
Open the SVG in a plain text editor. If you see <image or base64, the file contains an embedded picture rather than real vector paths, and it will not scale cleanly. Auto-traced files often contain hundreds of uneven anchor points; a clean logo uses as few as possible.
The file set you should end up with
- Vector master: SVG for web, EPS and PDF for print and signage.
- Transparent PNGs: for social media, presentations and placing over photos.
- Color versions: full color, one-color black and one-color white (reversed).
- Layouts: horizontal, stacked and icon-only, as in the Fern & Ferment example.
Before you launch
Who owns a logo
designed with AI?
Three separate questions decide whether you can use and protect an AI logo: the tool's license, copyright law and trademark law.
| Question | What to know | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Does the tool let me use it commercially? | It depends on the plan. Recraft's free-plan images belong to Recraft and cannot be used commercially. On many AI logo makers, free and standard logos can be used commercially but are non-exclusive, so other businesses may use the same design. | Read the license for the plan you are on before you design a business asset. |
| Is the logo protected by copyright? | In January 2025, the U.S. Copyright Office concluded that prompts alone do not give enough control over the result for copyright protection. Human selection, arrangement and editing can be protected. | Customize the AI output substantially and keep your working files as a record. |
| Can I register it as a trademark? | A trademark requires a distinctive mark you have the right to use exclusively. The USPTO base application fee has been $350 per class since January 18, 2025. | Choose an exclusive license where offered (Design.com's Exclusive license removes the template and allows trademark filing), and search the USPTO database first. |
| Could it resemble an existing logo? | AI models learn from existing imagery and can produce familiar-looking marks. | Never prompt with brand names, then run a reverse image search and a USPTO search. |
Final check
AI logo checklist
before you use it
Run through this list before you pay for files, print anything or file a trademark.
- The name is spelled correctly and readable in two seconds.
- The logo is recognizable at 16 pixels and in a circle crop.
- It works in solid black and solid white.
- It contains one core idea, not several symbols.
- No gradients, shadows or effects that will break in print or embroidery.
- You have true vector files, checked in a text or design editor.
- You have horizontal, stacked and icon-only versions.
- The license allows commercial use on the plan you used.
- A reverse image search and USPTO search found no close matches.
- You customized the design and kept your working files.
Common questions
AI logo design
FAQs
What are the best AI logo makers in 2026?
Design.com is the best AI logo maker overall, combining an AI generator that creates new designs, chat editing and editable vector files on every logo. Brandmark is the best one-time purchase at $35, Recraft is best for designers who want custom AI vector symbols, and BrandCrowd is best for browsing templates by industry.
Can AI design a logo?
Yes. AI logo makers and image generators can produce logo concepts in seconds, and some AI logo makers also deliver editable logos as vector files. AI still needs human direction: a clear brief, careful selection, specific edits and checks for legibility, files and licensing.
What is the best AI tool to design a logo?
It depends on what you need. A dedicated AI logo maker is best for a finished, usable logo with editable vector files and chat editing. Image generators like ChatGPT, Ideogram and Midjourney are best for exploring concepts. Recraft is best for designers who want AI-generated SVG symbols.
How do I write a good AI logo prompt?
Include seven parts: the logo type, the exact business name, the business and audience, one core idea, personality words, color limits and production rules such as flat vector, plain background, no gradients and no mockups. Leaving out the production rules is the most common cause of unusable AI logos.
Why does AI misspell my logo text?
Image generators draw letters as shapes rather than spelling words, so text often comes out garbled. Put the name in quotes and keep it short, use a tool known for text rendering such as Ideogram, or set the lettering yourself in an AI logo maker or design software.
Can I get a vector file from an AI logo generator?
Yes, from some of them. Design.com builds every logo as a vector, so you can download editable SVG, EPS and PDF files and keep editing them in Illustrator, Figma or Inkscape. Brandmark includes vector files from its $35 package, and Recraft generates SVG on paid plans. Image generators such as ChatGPT and Midjourney produce PNG or JPG images, which need to be traced or redrawn as vectors before print use.
Is an AI-generated logo copyrighted?
In the United States, a logo generated from a prompt alone is unlikely to be protected by copyright, according to the U.S. Copyright Office's January 2025 report. Human selection, arrangement and editing can be protected, and a registered trademark is usually the stronger protection for a logo.
Can I trademark a logo made with AI?
You can if the logo is distinctive and you hold exclusive rights to it. Check the tool's license first: some free and standard plans are non-exclusive. Design.com's Exclusive license removes the template from sale and allows a trademark filing. The USPTO base fee is $350 per class.
How long does it take to design a logo with AI?
Generating options takes minutes. A complete process, including a brief, two or three rounds of edits, building the logo variations and checking files and licensing, typically takes one to three hours with an AI logo maker, or longer if you redraw an image as a vector.
The takeaway
AI makes the options.
You make the logo.
Designing a logo with AI works best when you treat the tool as a fast, tireless assistant rather than the designer. Write a brief, choose the kind of tool that matches the result you need, generate wide, then edit narrow. Finish by getting true vector files, building the layouts you need, and checking the license and similar marks before launch.
If you want a finished, print-ready logo with the least extra work, start with an AI logo maker that offers chat editing and vector downloads. If you want to explore, use an image generator as a sketchbook and rebuild the winning idea properly.
